Ian Wakeling, Principal
Welcome to Dart Sailability. We aim to encourage anyone with a disability to take part and enjoy the sport of sailing or boating on The River Dart and welcome volunteer members to join us to share the pleasures of getting out on the river and helping others.
I joined Sailability recently with the aim of continuing to help people to share my love of sailing and have found everybody to be most friendly and helpful. I have been around boats almost all my life. I bought my first dinghy aged 11 and continue to race a Laser dinghy at Dittisham and an Enterprise at Cheddar. I have done some cruising and off shore racing including a Fastnet many years ago. As an RYA Senior Dinghy Instructor and Racing Coach who has introduced many children to sailing and racing I am looking forward to helping a new group of prospective and current sailors share my enjoyment of being out on the water. My favourite quote is paraphrased from Ratty in Wind in the Willows “There is nothing so good as messing about with boats”.
My wife Cherry and I recently moved to Dittisham after a career in Naval Ship Design and Project Management. As Principal I hope to use my management experience to help Dart Sailability to meet its future challenges and grow to meet the needs of current and future members. I welcome any comments, suggestions or questions and wish you all good boating on our beautiful river.

Chief Sailing Instructor
The RYA played a role enabling much training and experience in teaching children and adults the wonders and fun of messing around in boats, oh and learning to sail. It is a privilege to be able to volunteer with Dart Sailability and help people who are equally keen to enjoy the water on our beautiful river.

“I have lived in Devon for 20 years and have always enjoyed being by and on the water. I joined Dart Sailability 4 years ago and value the warm welcome I was given by the volunteers and sailors alike. Over this time, I qualified as PB2 and then powerboat instructor. I have now taken over the role of chief power instructor and look forward to thinking of new ways to enhance the powered side of DSG so that this fantastic river can be enjoyed by all.”.
Gill is a retired Optometrist and has only recently started to enjoy being afloat.
